To promote cultural exchanges between China and Cuba, the Symphony of Civilization: The Club of Chinese-Cuban Culturesalon was held at the National Library of China in Beijing on Friday.

According to organizers, the goal of the event was to enhance friendship between the two socialist countries and deepen cooperation involving academic and artistic exchanges such as the translation of literature, film and television works.

"Cuba has a long history of cultural heritage, and also appreciates Chinese culture. There are many examples of Chinese culture in Cuba," said Xu Yicong,

former Chinese ambassador to Cuba, during an interview at the salon with Ma Liya from China's Capital Normal University.

However, when it comes to outstanding literature, film and TV works from Cuba, Xu admitted that he has seldom paid attention to Cuban literature and the introduction of Chinese works to Cuba.

"Perhaps this is a flaw when it comes to our bilateral exchanges. Both sides still lack cultural understanding," Xu added.

The cultural salon was divided into three sections: forum discussion, keynote speeches and a literature seminar.

As the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic relations with China, Cuba has developed a deep friendship with China over the half a century since then.

According a press release, Cuba will host the third phase of the Symphony of Civilization series of cultural events, which will focus on promoting translation and increasing cross-cultural understanding in the field of literature.(Source:Global Times Published)
