  Ye Zhou

Ye Zhou (叶舟), whose original name is Ye Zhou (叶洲), was born on February 13, 1966 on a boat street in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province and this is where he gets his name from (Zhou is the Chinese for “boat”). He is currently a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a member of the Poetry Committee of the China Writers Association, a vice chairman of the Writers Association of Gansu Province, and a director of Gansu Daily Newspaper. After graduating from Northwest Normal University on the banks of the Yellow River in 1988, he worked as a teacher, then for a newspaper as a reporter and editor, and he used his spare time to write poetry, fiction, prose, and film and television scripts. He studied at the “Advanced Seminar for the Seventh Young Writers” at the Lu Xun Institute of Literature. For more than 30 years, he has published a large number of novels, poems and prose works. His works have been selected for various yearbooks, annual and Chinese novel lists and have been translated into English, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian and other languages. Some of his novels have been adapted into films and television dramas. His works have won the Sixth Lu Xun Literature Award, the “People’s Literature” Novel Award, “People’s Literature” Annual Poet Award, “October” Literature Award, the “Zhong Shan” Literary Award and so on.

Ye Zhou has lived in Lanzhou, an important town on the ancient Silk Road, for a long time. He lives in the hinterlands of the Loess Plateau and the Tibetan Plateau on the banks of the Yellow River. The profound humanistic heritage, mottled and complicated historical connotations, and the natural features of the sky and the vast land, which are carried by this vast expanse of territory, have given Ye Zhou endless imagination and writing. Over the years, Ye Zhou has often been like a wanderer, traveling alone, asking questions about nature, learning from mountains and rivers, learning from people and beauty, and constantly enriching the power of connection between personal experience and writing. Ye Zhou knows well that this place is his source and place of blessing. He uses this as a basis to continue writing and will continue doing so.

Ye Zhou has written poetry collections including Great Dunhuang, Borderland Poetry, Experimental Song, Ye Zhou’s Poem Selection, Dunhuang Book of Songs, Lead the Boat like a Leaf, Silk Road, My Own Heart, Moonlight Shining in Gansu Province, Flowers - Songs under the Bronze Branch, Back of the Century - The Secret Structure of the 20th Century, the essay collections Today‘s Hills, Endless Singing, Northwestern Chronicles, and the novel collections Ye Zhou’s Novels (two volumes), The Eighth is a Bronze Statue, There is Peace in My Tent, Qin Nibbak, Brother I, the novels Embroidery at the End of the Case, The Return of the Old Times, and the long-running television series Our Honorable Days.

In 2017, Ye Zhou brought out his latest collection of poems, Silk Road, which includes 140 short poems, with the intention of writing a “poetry biography” for the ancient Silk Road. Some commentators believe that the book is a modern writing and poetic expedition to the ancient Silk Road, with abundant vitality, faraway boundaries, and fantastic imagination; it is full of heroic feelings and romanticism. Under the author’s pen, the greatness of the mountains and rivers, geographical folklore, river temples, historical figures, legends and miracles, flowers and ruins are the loyal and filial people on this splendid avenue and the brave descendants of this great pedigree. The poet restores an old road of desolation back to its youthful zeal, allowing the wandering ancestors to become youthful runners, you see them ride away, admire the historical charm, and build an imaginative poetic frontier. This is not only his personal distinctive style, but also his unique aesthetic qualities contributing to the entirety of contemporary Chinese poetry.
