  Ouyang Qiansen

Ouyang Qiansen, a first-rate writer, was born in October 1965 in Tongren City, Guizhou Province. He is currently chairman of the Guizhou Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles and a member of the National Committee of the China Writers Association. He has written the novels, Xiongguan Mandao, Non-Love Time, A Desperate Place Meets Life, The Lady of Extravagance, 12 collections of short stories and essays including Taste, Lots of White and Little Black, Mang Kunlun, Water Tears, Ouyang Qiansen’s Short Story Selection, and Pillow Dream Mountain River. He screenwrote and took on the role of executive producer for fifteen TV serials including Xiongguan Mandao, A Desperate Place Meets Life, The Lady of Extravagance, The Twenty-four Turns in the Road, 15 movies including Days Under the Clouds and The Day of Survival. He has won 18 Chinese film, TV and literature awards, as well as more than 50 provincial and ministerial awards including the First Prize of the Guizhou Literary Award. Ouyang Qiansen was a geological prospector and tester for eight years in his early years. He walked more than a hundred miles every day with a geological hammer and a magnifying glass, climbing over the mountains come wind, rain or shine. It was hard work that left him with little to no free time.

Long periods of living outdoors has given Ouyang Qiansen special feelings towards Guizhou’s beautiful scenery and customs. The famous critic Meng Fanhua once said: “Ouyang Qiansen’s tracing of ancient customs and styles in Guizhou inherits a great tradition. (His works) are a literary representation of his love for Guizhou’s hometown complex.” His novel creations not only inherited the Neo-literary realism traditions of contemporary Chinese Guizhou writers such as Jian Xian’ai and He Shiguang, but also revitalized traditional Chinese literary resources such as tales of mystery, ambition, natural sciences, searching for gods, legends, local records, and notes. The professional knowledge of modern geology is integrated into the narrative of the novel, and the geographical features of Guizhou are displayed with poetic brushstrokes, forming a unique modern narrative mode of knowledge.

Ouyang Qiansen’s novel and screenplay The Lady of Extravagance is about “The Lady of Extravagance”, an ancient Guizhou ethnic minority politician who is firm in her belief of a love for her hometown and the maintaining of national unity. The feelings towards country and family of ethnic minorities in Guizhou, passed down through the generations, is condensed. In his writing, those gritty and perseverant farmers create a beautiful life in a harsh environment with perseverance and optimism in order to change their living conditions.

The novel Knocking the Dog, which won the second Pu Songling Short Story Award, was considered to be “thinking about human nature from an extension of canine nature and a call for the promotion of people’s spiritual qualities. The novel not only has flavors of classical Chinese novels in its structure, it also sees the heritage of traditional culture in the writing of morality and human nature. The novel reflects the attachment of a dog to its owner, the indifference of a chef to emotions, and the affectedness of an apprentice to reflect the light of humanity, using “knocking the dog” to skillfully and subtly display the grand literary theme of humanistic anatomy. It is regarded as a model text for short stories.”

In 2018, the 3rd issue of People’s Literature magazine published Ouyang Qiansen’s new work on documentary literature, Baode Sanchunhui. The work is described in the final stage of the poverty-relief campaign, the hardships that people living in the hot land of Bijie experienced, and the hard times they survived through.
