  Li Yuansheng

Li Yuansheng was born in August 1963 in Wusheng County, Sichuan Province. He began writing poetry in 1981 and began fieldwork and natural essay writing in 2000. After graduating from Chongqing University in 1983, he served as deputy editor-in-chief of Times and Truth News, general manager of Chongqing Newspaper Group Book Co., Ltd., chairman and editor-in-chief of New Women‘s Fashion Media Group. He is currently a professional writer at Chongqing Literature College, a vice chairman of the Chongqing Writers Association, and a member of the China Writers Association Poetry Committee. Representative works include the poetry collections Infinity, the poems I Want to Waste Time with You, Other Side of the Fence, the poem series It’s Getting Late, the novel Urban Jokes and so on. He has won awards such as the China Good Poetry Award and the October Literature Award. The poem Infinity won the 6th Lu Xun Literature Award Poetry Prize.

Li Yuansheng says: “Writing is a safe haven in life. It is a watchtower.” By the mid-1990s, he had developed a unique personal style with a broad vision and refined poetry. In addition to poetry, he has also written novels. In 1995, the novel Urban Jokes won Chongqing’s “Five Ones”Engineering Award. In addition, more than a decade of field trips has reshaped his writing. In 2007, his photographic collection of essays entitled The Beauty of Insects was published and was selected as one of the top 100 best books recommended by the General Administration of Press and Publication for youth in the country.

Infinity is a collection published in 2012 that covers thepoet’s best work from 1986 to 2012. The awarding speech of the Lu Xun Literature Award Poetry Prize stated: “Li Yuansheng has an open mind and is good at intuitively perceiving emotions and rationality, revealing the complex connotations of life and humanity in everyday things and scenes. His poems are quiet and reserved, have an elegant structure, narrative, and musicality with a jumpy plot, which remains intrinsically logical. The language is clean and tidy, embodying elegant poetic and lively thinking.” Li Yuansheng wrote in I Want to Waste Time with You: “I want to waste time with you / look down at the fish / leave the tea cups on the table / leave / waste their good-looking shadows / I would also like to waste the sunset together / such as walking / until the stars fill the sky.”

In today’s fast-paced modern life, “wasting away time”, as an attitude towards life, evoked the resonance of many people. The poem was spread widely online and offline, and was made into a song of the same name. “Infinity is more dignified and more rational. I Want to Waste Time with You is lighter and more emotional, and it is more like a lyrical piece.”Li Yuansheng said. The Other Side of the Fence won the first “China Poem”award. The poet said: “This life is an old play script / this year, only getting old appeals / they have come, I stretched out my hand / in between my body, this ancient fence.” The poet uses a fence as a metaphor for his body, which is very novel and profound. When a poet wants to shake hands and talk cheerfully with ancient cultures and ancient times, the aging body becomes a fence that blocks communication.

In 2017, Li Yuansheng’s group poem entitled It’s Getting Late won the Chen Ziang Annual Poet Award in 2017. The award remarks mentioned that the poem shows the communication between man and nature, revealing to a certain degree the complexity of the world and the truth of human nature; and that one can move toward perception and cognition of things in life in an intuitive manner, and is full of intellectual factors. The language is natural, the writing is interesting, and there is a sign of effortlessness.
